Principles for recognizing and respecting Indigenous Peoples’, local communities’, and Afro-descendant Peoples’ land, territorial and resource rights in climate, conservation, and sustainable development actions and investments.
Various international frameworks and commitments exist to recognize land and resource rights, but they remain uncoordinated and lack globally recognized principles rooted in human rights law. The Land Rights Standard, a rightsholder-led initiative, addresses this gap.
Establish a rightsholder-driven and determined framework for guiding rights-based actions and investments.
Recognize, respect, and protect the distinct and differentiated rights of Indigenous Peoples, Afro-descendant Peoples, local communities, women, and youth.
Encourage entities to implement actions for rights-based approaches to sustainable landscapes.
Help deliver on global goals and commitments, such as the Paris Agreement, Sustainable Development Goals, and Global Biodiversity Framework.
Strengthen partnerships with communities to pave the way for a more sustainable, equitable, and just future for all.
